

Provide continual surveillance of swimmers in an assigned area for long periods of time with limited breaks and restrictions on distractions.
Perform rescues of persons and vessels in surfline, large ocean surf, open ocean and bay waters. Perform basic underwater search and recovery for drowning victims without SCUBA.
Advise public of dangerous ocean conditions and hazards; inform public of safe locations to swim. Inform the public in basic marine science.
Administer emergency medical aid, treat drowning and near-drowning victims; perform CPR; provide spinal immobilization; treat burns and traumatic injuries.
Identify conditions requiring surfing enforcement.
Locate, hold and reunite lost children with parents.
Recognize and remove, or call for the removal of, dangerous beach hazards.
Answer routine questions and provide general information to the public.
Operate a lifeguard unit or rescue boat in the patrol of an assigned division; provide assistance and back up as required for lifeguards assigned to the division.
Perform as the department dispatcher, answer emergency call, record information, dispatch units, and notify additional public safety agencies.
Perform rescues; advise beach goers of dangerous ocean hazards in assigned areas; administers first aid; aid in lost and found operations.

As a Junior Lifeguard Instructor: serve as mentor to assigned instructors; substitute for Instructors; write and review examinations and parent handouts; organize and plan special events; perform rescues; check and evaluate the safety of assigned area and staff, coordinates the use of equipment.

Perform related duties as assigned.
